After completing a degree in Film & Media at UNSW, Lalita trained in documentary directing at AFTRS, learning from acclaimed filmmakers including D.A. Pennebaker, Gillian Armstrong and Bob Connolly. She started out directing for theatre and making films in Africa and India with organisations such as the Wilderness Group and Women Against Rape (WAR). In amongst this, she lived for many years in monasteries and ashrams as a student of consciousness.

In 2014, Lalita moved to the USA to work as a director and producer in the film industry. Notably she co-directed and produced the award winning documentary Hare Krishna! The Mantra, the Movement and the Swami Who Started It All. The film screened in cinemas worldwide for two years and was distributed by Abramorama, earning the highest per-screen average of any independent film in the U.S. on its opening weekend.

Lalita then went on to become the Creative Director of the Bhakti Center, a thriving organisation in Manhattan that focused on community-led social projects and conscious community building. There, she led a major brand transformation and helped guide the organisation to its most successful financial year during the pandemic through innovative digital strategy.

In 2021, Lalita returned to Australia, moving to Byron Bay and establishing Lalita Ross Studio.
